Project Update - Schnapper Rock
Since breaking ground in February, we've made strong progress at Schnapper Rock Road, transforming a single residential site into a six-lot development.
Despite the challenges of steep terrain, tight boundaries, and wet weather, the team has successfully completed demolition, excavation, major earthworks, and retaining wall construction, setting the foundations for the future homes and infrastructure.
The before and after photos show just how much the site has changed over the past few months.
A huge credit to Elijah, Grant, Leon, Maverick, and the wider team for keeping the project moving! With completion on track for the end of July, we're excited to see the final stages come together.

Relocation of The Hub and Admin offices at The Botanic
We recently completed the relocation of the Botanic Hub, including the removal and relocation of staff amenities, the admin office, and the 24 tonne Hub building featured in this clip. 🏗️
The project required detailed planning, tight coordination, and precise execution across demolition, building relocation, new services, and decking installation. Huge credit to the team leading the charge, Jason Webb, Ryan Daniels, Bradley Goldstone, Nick Direen, and our Health, Safety & Environmental Manager, Shay Narayan.

On Site at The Botanic: Stage 8 Lift Handover
Last month on site at The Botanic, the MAKO team completed the commissioning handover for the Stage 8 lift. Our Site Manager, Bradley, worked closely with Joe, Senior Architectural Technician at TDCG, to review installation quality, finishes, tolerances, and compliance with project specifications.

Project reflection: Stage 8 Villas at The Botanic Hibiscus Coast
This year marks the successful completion of Stage 8 Villas at The Botanic Hibiscus Coast.
The Stage 8 villas offer premium living for residents seeking both comfort and independence at The Botanic Hibiscus Coast. This phase consists of six blocks of duplex units and one triplex block, collectively creating 30 beautifully appointed independent living homes. These villas are designed for comfort, style, and easy living, with spacious layouts, abundant natural light, and seamless indoor–outdoor flow. Each home features contemporary interiors, high-quality finishes, and designer kitchens with premium appliances.
Construction began on 16 September 2024, and over the past year the team worked through a demanding programme to deliver this stage to an exceptional standard, with official completion achieved on 26 September 2025.
Strong collaboration between Mako, Matvin, and TDCG played a major role in the project’s success, with clear communication and effective problem-solving keeping the build running smoothly from start to finish.

Team Building Day 2025, a roaring success at Auckland Zoo!
MAKO Commercial, Matvin and The Design & Consultancy Group hit the Auckland Zoo for our annual Team Building Day, and it was an absolute blast. We split into teams, grabbed an iPad, and tackled challenges all over the zoo! From trivia and tasks to hilarious photos and even impromptu rap videos!
So many laughs, so much talent, and the best weather we could’ve asked for. Huge congrats to Team HSTB for taking out first place! 🙌

Procore Training
MAKO Commercial, Matvin Group and The Design & Consultancy Group recently welcomed Procore Technologies from Australia for a workshop focused on system improvements. Procore, a leader in its field, has consistently supported us over the years. We're enthusiastic about incorporating new tools to streamline our H&S and QA processes and overall project management.
Tamara Harris, Procore’s customer success engineer, ran the sessions and addressed our team's queries. It is great to partner with someone who listens and acts on customer feedback. MAKO, Matvin, and TDCG look forward to utilising the Procore tools on upcoming projects.

Building a Safer Workplace: MAKO’s Critical Risk Framework in Action
At MAKO Commercial, safety isn't just a policy—it's a collaborative effort. The critical risk framework is crucial for ensuring worker safety by focusing on hazards with the highest potential for causing significant harm, serious injury, or even death. Over the past 18 months, we have conducted 80 critical risk inspections across our projects.
But this achievement started long before the first inspection. To create our new critical risk framework, we started by inviting team members to share their perspectives on what constituted a critical risk, both to them and for them. This inclusive approach was the foundation of our new critical risk framework.
This allows MAKO to proactively identify and manage the most significant safety hazards on our sites. We are constantly reviewing and evolving our framework to ensure it aligns with the unique demands of our projects. By engaging our team in the process, we have created a framework that is not only robust but also deeply understood and embraced by those involved in our projects.
The list of critical risk inspections completed:
Working at Heights, Working & Operating Mobile Plant, Silica Dust, Powered Tools, Live Services, Excavations, Hot Works, Lifting Operations, Temporary structures (gates, propping, scaffolding, shore loading).

One Team Social Club

We're proud to reflect on the completion of 1 Alberto Lane, a key project delivered in 2021.
Located on a 3,638m² prime site in Silverdale, this $10m, two-story commercial development offers a total net lettable area of 2,000m². Anchored by Joe’s Garage and Anytime Fitness, the complex also features key tenants like AON Insurance, Shoe Science, and Hell Pizza, among others.
Part of Matvin Group’s wider Hibiscus Coast master-planned development, 1 Alberto Lane serves as a vibrant commercial hub, benefiting both businesses and the local community.

Project reflection: Great North Road
Looking back with pride, it’s 5 years since The Groves was completed.
Situated on an 8,400m² site along Great North Road in West Auckland, The Groves is a landmark mixed-use development that brought together quality housing and retail.
Designed around eight key tenancies, including BestStart Childcare, Anytime Fitness, Burger King, and Z Energy, the retail precinct is a vital community hub. The residential component offers a thoughtful mix of 27 terraced homes and 13 apartments, ranging from 50m² to 110m² in one, two, and three-bedroom layouts.
The Groves was delivered through the strong collaboration of: Matvin Group, Development Manager; Gel Architects, Architectural Design; and us, MAKO, Construction Contractor.
Five years on, The Groves stands as a testament to what well-planned, community-focused design can achieve. We’re proud to have been part of it.
Situated on an 8,400m² site along Great North Road in West Auckland, The Groves is a landmark mixed-use development that brought together quality housing and retail.
Designed around eight key tenancies, including BestStart Childcare, Anytime Fitness, Burger King, and Z Energy, the retail precinct is a vital community hub. The residential component offers a thoughtful mix of 27 terraced homes and 13 apartments, ranging from 50m² to 110m² in one, two, and three-bedroom layouts.
The Groves was delivered through the strong collaboration of: Matvin Group, Development Manager; Gel Architects, Architectural Design; and us, MAKO, Construction Contractor.

Project reflection: Garden Villas at The Botanic Hibiscus Coast
It’s been a year since we achieved practical completion of Stage 10 at The Botanic Hibiscus Coast, a milestone that delivered seven premium villas and a thoughtfully designed community garden.
This project added real value to the village, with two large glasshouses and 24 raised planter boxes now forming a popular amenity for residents. The homes and garden have become a vibrant part of daily life and a great addition to our growing retirement village community.

Stage 8 Q&A with Jason Webb
With the Stage 8 Villas at The Botanic Silverdale nearing completion, we caught up with Senior Project Manager Jason Webb to reflect on how the project has progressed.
How are the Villas tracking against the project timeline?
“Strategies that the team implemented early in the project allowed us to gain time in the Structural phase, which has put us in a position to hand over the villas earlier than expected. With the fit-out now well underway, we are concentrating on delivering a top-quality finish.”
What have you enjoyed most about the Stage 8 project?
“I've enjoyed the level of pre-planning we have put into the project. It's been rewarding to have the time to create a detailed plan and see it come to fruition on-site.”
Can you explain some of the benefits of using post slab tensioning technology on the villas?
“Using post-tensioned concrete slabs in the construction of villas is ideal, as it minimises the need for additional structural supports within the ceiling void. This design allows for spanning in both directions and eliminates the necessity of secondary beams, resulting in more open space for services and higher ceilings. It also leaves a flat surface for the installation of service trades, which can be more cost-effective with passive fireproofing.”
Another milestone project is nearly wrapped, and Stage 8 has been a great example of smart planning and solid teamwork on site.

Exciting milestone achieved in Stage 8 at The Botanic Hibiscus Coast
Last month marked a significant achievement in the progress of our Stage 8 project at The Botanic Hibiscus Coast. Also known as Eastern Villas Phase Two, this stage includes six blocks of duplex villas and one triplex block, adding even more high-quality homes to our growing retirement village community.
We’re proud to share that as of March, all roofing has been completed on these villas—an important step toward bringing these beautiful new homes to life. With this milestone behind us, we’re moving full speed ahead with the next phases of construction.
A big thank you to our dedicated team for their hard work and commitment to delivering excellence. We can’t wait to see these villas take their final shape and welcome new residents to The Botanic Hibiscus Coast!

One Team Annual Retreat 2025
Last Wednesday, our Matvin, MAKO, and TDCG teams gathered in Taupo for our 2025 One Team Annual Retreat.
This three-day retreat focused on team building, reflecting on our progress, and setting measurable goals for the year ahead. It was a fantastic opportunity for the group to come together, collaborate, and have meaningful discussions about current and upcoming projects.
We also added a bit of friendly competition with our One Team bowls event and the bridge building challenge. It’s always rewarding to balance work with a bit of play, and the retreat provided the perfect chance to strengthen relationships and set a positive tone for the year ahead.

Showcasing the Rimu Apartments Exterior
The carefully considered façade of the Rimu Apartments at The Botanic Hibiscus Coast is a testament to thoughtful design by PENZL and expert craftsmanship by our team.
Nestled on the western side of the village, the façade mimics its lush surroundings through a nature-inspired colour palette. Sculpted relief patterns, elegant balcony shrouds, and detailed mesh screens create a layered, dynamic aesthetic while maintaining a respectful presence alongside the surrounding villas.
Beyond its striking appearance, the façade is designed with purpose — offering privacy, shading, and weather protection to enhance the comfort of the building’s residents. These elements ensure that each balcony is not just a space, but a sanctuary, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living.

Using post-tensioning technology on our Stage 8 villas
After successfully implementing post-tensioned slabs in our apartment buildings at The Botanic Hibiscus Coast, we’re now bringing the same innovation to our Stage 8 duplex villas!
By enhancing structural integrity and material efficiency, post-tensioning allows for more efficient slab to slab thicknesses, longer spans, and faster construction—a key advantage in large-scale developments.
The process begins with high-strength steel tendons placed strategically within the slab before the concrete is poured. Once the concrete reaches the necessary strength, hydraulic jacks apply tension to these tendons, introducing compressive forces that counteract tensile stresses. This significantly reduces cracking and deflection. The tendons are then anchored in place and, in bonded systems, grouted for added durability.
With this method, construction timelines are shortened, less secondary structure is required, and buildings achieve greater strength and longevity – It also result in a significant positive impact acoustically for multi-unit developments. We think this is a game-changer for our construction projects.

Rimu Apartments (Stage 14) handed to The Botanic Hibiscus Coast

Annual Team Building Day 2024
Last Friday Matvin, MAKO and TDCG got together for our annual team building day. Our team spent the day golfing and quad biking before heading to Sweat Shop Brew Kitchen for a drink and bite to eat.

One Team Social Club
Strong team culture is a key value for Matvin, MAKO and TDCG. We pride ourselves on building strong relationships with our clients and with our colleagues.

Subcontractors Bowls Day 2024
Recently we held our annual Subcontractors Bowls Day, and what a success it was!
We had 130 people compete on the rink, from 45 companies. Shoutout to Dominion Constructors who took out the 2024 championship.
Thank you to Dayle ITM, Atlas Concrete, GFC Fasteners and Placemakers for sponsoring this years prizes. Thank you to Chris Dillion for capturing all the action from the day.

Reflecting on our progress at The Botanic Silverdale
At the end of 2020 we broke ground at 17 Small Road, the site that would become the thriving Retirement Village known as The Botanic, Silverdale.
Fast forward to 2024, we have delivered 108 luxury homes, award-winning village amenities, and more than 160 residents call The Botanic home.
We’re proud of what we have achieved so far and there is so much more to come!

Stage 8 commences at The Botanic Silverdale
We are excited to announce we have commenced construction on the next stage of The Botanic Silverdale.
This stage includes 30 up-down villas, the first 14 units commenced this month, and an exterior lift allowing residents to easily move around our village site.
The project is being led by our experienced MAKO and Matvin team members, Elijah Main, Jason Webb, Jason Lin, Peter Blick, Samuel Giddings, Vicky Li, Jeremy Quiding, Ella Kendrick and Olivia Standen.

RVA Conference 2024
In August members of our leadership and development teams headed down to Wellington to attend the Retirement Villages Association NZ Inc Conference.
The conference is the annual summit of the Retirement Village industry and a place where operators, developers, and stakeholders, including government, meet to discuss all things in the retirement sector.
The team took away some great learnings from the conference. Highlights included an update on the economy from Sharon Zollner of ANZ, a compelling demographics oversight from Simon Kuestenmacher of The Demographics Group, and several compelling keynote speeches and addresses from key RVA members.

Fly the Flag Week
Last week was Fly the Flag week, an initiative organised by MATES in Construction NZ.
MAKO proudly flies the MATES flag to show our support and raise awareness of suicide prevention in the construction industry.
As a part of Fly the Flag week, we held a toolbox with MATES coordinator Damian Tuiloma to talk about mental health and wellbeing in our workplace. It was a moment to remind ourselves of the importance of connection, compassion and support for one another. We also reflected on the 80 members of the construction industry who lost their lives to suspected suicide last year.
MATES in Construction is an incredible organisation and we are proud to work with them to make our workplace a safer and more supportive environment for our team.

Hero Observer Award
Recently, our Senior Site Manager Nick Direen was awarded MAKO’s Hero Observer Award by our Health, Safety and Environment Manager Shay Narayan.
The Hero Observer Award is an initiative that recognises proactive health and safety reporting. Nick consistently sets a positive example on site by producing meaningful hazard reports and actively works to resolve the hazards in a timely manner.
It is vital that everyone reports observations on our construction sites. The reports help MAKO find trends and highlight critical areas where we can improve our health and safety procedures.

Mid-Project Lessons Learnt
We’re always striving to work smarter and more efficiently.
Recently, the Matvin and MAKO teams held a mid-project Lessons Learnt session off the back of such a successful construction start to the Rimu apartments. These sessions are an opportunity to come together as a wider project team to discuss what’s working well, what challenges we’re facing, and how we can more easily overcome the challenges moving forward. The session was facilitated by our industry expert and Board advisor Graham Darlow. Thank you Graham for hosting such a productive mid project lessons learnt session.
Lessons Learnt are key to the success of all our projects, especially those with multiple stages. By discussing, tracking and reflecting on our work, we move through projects with greater health and safety, quality, time and cost efficiency, and grow our knowledge and capabilities as a team.

New Zealand Construction Law certifications
Congratulations to our team members, Ryan Daniels, Peter Blick and Ryan Le Poidevin who have successfully completed the Chartered Institute of Professional Certification: New Zealand Construction Law. This program has been certified by CPD Certification Service for conforming to continuing professional principles.
The course covered procurement methods, the recent changes to NZS3910, and covered a wide range of contract types. The team also learned a lot about consenting processes, compliance requirements and dispute resolution options. The content-rich course also went through the full New Zealand legislative framework and regulations.

Mid-Year One Team Meeting
Last Wednesday looked a little different from our usual Monday to Friday. The Matvin, MAKO and TDCG teams were at the BNZ Business Partners Centre for our Mid-Year One Team meeting.
The meeting is a chance for the whole group to get together and discuss progress against our goals since the One Team Annual Retreat hosted in Mount Maunganui in March. Our team set goals at each meeting, so we check-in on how each goal is tracking, who is accountable, how we are going to achieve them, and reflect on what we have achieved so far.
Our Leadership, Development, Site, and Health and Safety Managers presented project updates and talk about what’s coming up in the back half of the year. It’s also a chance to build stronger relationships across the group.

Toolbox Meeting BBQ
Weekly Toolbox meetings are an opportunity to engage with our sub-contractor team to ensure everyone understands the projects direction, critical risks and goals for the period ahead.
This morning we had Site Safe and Cory’s Electrical along to our Toolbox to talk about safety eyewear. After an engaging talk, the Site Safe team jumped on the BBQ to cook up a hot breakfast for everyone – what a great way to start Friday!

Celebrating the completion of the Garden Villas at The Botanic
Matvin and MAKO are proud to lead the development and construction of The Botanic Silverdale. In mid-May the team achieved Practical Completion of the Garden Villas (Stage 10 of the project). In June 2024 we started to welcome our new residents into these amazing Villa’s located next to the community garden.

We are excited to share Vicky Li has kick-started her career journey toward becoming a Quantity Surveyor.
Vicky demonstrated her attention to detail and work ethic in her Data Entry Admin role with MAKO. After realising she wanted to pursue a career in Quantity Surveying, MAKO was pleased to offer her an opportunity as a Cadet Quantity Surveyor and she is now enrolled in part time study towards a Diploma in Construction, majoring in Quantity Surveying at Unitec.
Well done Vicky, we are all here to support you through your studies and cadetship, we wish you well!

Installing a roof tent over the Rimu Apartments
The Botanic Silverdale’s Rimu Apartment will be under wraps for a while - we’re installing a temporary roof tent!
Our team has never applied a roof tent to a building of this scale before, but we are welcoming this ‘insurance policy’ as we move into the wild winter months.

FENZ practice onsite at The Botanic
Recently the MAKO team welcomed 12 members from Fire and Emergency New Zealand to The Botanic Silverdale site.
FENZ borrowed MAKO’s crane tower to simulate a rescue from height. The exercise allowed the FENZ crew to practice using their basket stretcher and rope systems.
It was rewarding to get an insight to how much time, resources and training go into equipping our emergency services with the skills and knowledge required to take action in emergency situations.
Thank you to Riggers and Operators (R&O) for their technical crane assistance throughout the exercise.

On Friday evening members of our MAKO and Matvin team dressed to the nines to attend Property Council New Zealand’s Property Industry Awards.
We are pleased to announce that The Botanic Silverdale’s Clubhouse and Poolhouse received a merit award in the Holmes Group Tourism & Leisure Property category.

MAKO and Massey University's School of Built Environment
MAKO is a principal sponsor of Massey University’s School of Built Environment programme.
Last month we attended the school’s prizegiving and supported our cadet Maverick who had the opportunity to share his experience studying towards a Bachelor of Construction and working with MAKO.
The prize giving was a great opportunity to acknowledge Massey’s high-achieving students, celebrate new graduates, including our team members Maverick Hayes and Jason Lin, and continue to build valuable relationships with Massey University's faculty and alumni.

The Botanic nominated for Property Industry Awards 2024
We are excited to share that The Botanic Silverdale’s Clubhouse and Poolhouse is a finalist for Property Council New Zealand’s Property Industry Awards 2024 in the Tourism & Leisure category.
Our team led the construction of this resort-level facility, which we completed in September 2023. The space includes the Clubhouse Café, swimming pool, gym, spa, sauna, steam room, bowling green, and a beautiful outdoor BBQ area.
It is fantastic to have our craftsmanship and the development management strengths of Matvin Group recognised. We are looking forward to the results on June 14.

Jason Webb: Senior Project Manager
Jason brings a wealth of knowledge in construction planning and safety management to the MAKO team.
Formerly at Watts & Hughes, Jason has over five years of experience in delivering complex and large-scale projects in the construction industry. He is a graduate of Unitec Institute of Technology where he obtained a Graduate Diploma in Construction Project Management and has a background in industrial safety, contractors, and commercial management.
Jason is passionate about ensuring that every project meets the highest standards of safety, quality, and efficiency and that every stakeholder is satisfied with the results.
Jason brings a wealth of knowledge in construction planning and safety management to the MAKO team.

The Botanic Silverdale's Community Gardens open
The landscaping team has worked tirelessly to design, plant, and nurture The Botanic Silverdale's native and exotic gardens.
Villa residents can tend their own gardens, but construction of a sizeable community garden, including two 26m2 Winter Gardenz Limited glasshouses connected by a pergola, have just been completed and officially opened last Thursday. There are 24 planter boxes in total and when viewed from above, they resemble a fern. The planter boxes and glasshouses are surrounded by an edible garden of fruit trees.
Included are bench seats, tables and chairs, and a BBQ area to support residents to spend time together in the community gardens, or host visiting friends and family.
Residents have enthusiastically embraced their new amenity and jumped in boots and all planting a mixture of vegetables, herbs and flowering plants – the space will be blooming with colour and flavour in no time!

Gregory Plekhotkin: Project Manager
Greg originally trained as a Civil and Structural Engineer in Russia before moving into project management. He then moved to New Zealand five years ago and completed a Graduate Diploma in Construction Project Management at UNITEC. Grigory has spent the last four years working for Kalmar in a Project Management role and was responsible for Te Uru Apartments in Hobsonville and more recently helping handover The Foundation, a high-end Retirement Village located in Parnell.
We are thrilled to have Grigory join us who will be involved in Stage 14 of The Botanic, Silverdale.

Subcontractors and Suppliers Bowls Day 2023
Last Friday, MAKO and Matvin Group had the pleasure of hosting our Annual Subcontractors and Suppliers Bowls day. It was all about friendly competition, good vibes, and celebrating what has been a busy year. Our subcontractors and suppliers play a pivotal role in our achievements, and we're truly grateful for these relationships.

Shay Narayan gains PractNZISM accreditation
NZISM (NZ Institute of Safety Management) is New Zealand's leading professional association for occupational Health and Safety.
Shay Narayan has recently been accredited as a PractNZISM by NZISM. With an internationally aligned accreditation programme, requiring tertiary-level health and safety qualifications as well as relevant work experience, MAKO is proud to have an NZISM accredited member on our team.
The relationship gives us access to valuable research, tools, and practices to enhance and drive the capability of OHS practice in New Zealand at an International level.

Leadership training with Team Performance Consultants
At MAKO and Matvin Group we understand that great leadership is pivotal to the success of our people and our projects.
As part of our commitment to coaching our team and investing in our people, we have recently engaged with Tony McMurtrie at Team Performance Consultants to execute a bespoke leadership training programme. This programme focuses on self-awareness, interpersonal skills, interactions and aims to enhance personal leadership styles and give our staff the tools required to tackle the pressures of the property and construction sector.
We are excited to see our leaders of MAKO and Matvin flourish!

The Botanic Silverdale's Clubhouse and Poolhouse Grand Opening
The Botanic celebrated a significant milestone on Thursday 5 October with the grand opening of The Club and Poolhouse. The facility includes The Clubhouse Café along with a swimming pool, gym, spa, sauna, steam room, bowling green, and a beautiful outdoor BBQ area.
The Botanic is now home to over 100 residents with the completion of the Nikau Apartments and Eastern Villas.
Construction is now underway on our next stage of Garden Villas and The Rimu Apartments.

Half-day team building workshop
Recently, MAKO and Matvin Group took a day from the office for a half-day workshop for learning opportunities to fuel our personal and professional growth, followed by a team-building activity.
Taking time out from the office and our construction site is more than just a day of fun; it's a day to reflect on our collective achievements and milestones, recognize the strengths and talents that each team member brings, and take an opportunity to recharge for the challenges and projects ahead.
Our team-building activity was the Amazing GPS Race around Auckland CBD which was an engaging way to encourage collaboration and problem-solving.
Thank you to everyone at MAKO and Matvin Group for making this day possible, and here's to our continued success and growth as a team.

The Botanic Hibiscus Coast's Clubhouse opens
The buzz is real seeing everyone’s hard work come to life as MAKO and the many crew involved in The Botanic get The Clubhouse ready for opening!
A huge sense of achievement is flowing through the team! It’s almost time to step back, order that glass of wine and take it all in!
This evening, The Botanic residents are coming together to celebrate the momentous occasion with guest of honour, the Honourable Mark Mitchell, National Party MP for Whangaparāoa, officially opening The Clubhouse with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

MAKO Future Leaders Cup and Scholarship, in conjunction with Massey University
For the third year running, MAKO has partnered with Massey University and its School of Built Environment, to offer the next generation of construction leaders the chance to secure the MAKO Future Leaders Cup and Scholarship!
The scholarship aims to not only provide financial support to students but to also give them the chance to experience working in a commercial construction and property development business. It also provides them with the 600 hours of work experience needed to fulfill program requirements and a permanent position as a Cadet with MAKO.
We are pleased to announce the winner for 2023, Maverick Hayes.

The scholarship aims to not only provide financial support to students but to also give them the chance to experience working in a commercial construction and property development business. It also provides them with the 600 hours of work experience needed to fulfill program requirements and a permanent position as a Cadet with MAKO.

Cranky The Crane
Last month a local mum in the Hibiscus Coast community reached out to The Botanic team regarding one of the cranes on-site. Her son, Abel, about to turn three, had fallen in love with the crane due to passing it on their daily commute. The crane brought so much joy to him, and he named it CRANKY.
However, one morning, much to Abel's disappointment, cranky was gone! Abel’s mum was keen to know where Cranky would be so she could do a drive-by at the new site.
John Carter kindly responded to Abel’s mum to let her know that Cranky had finished its work at the site and was put back in storage until the next job.
The Botanic team set up a surprise viewing for Abel’s third Birthday where he had an up-close and personal experience with Cranky. They gave him a hard hat and hi-vis jacket, so he looked the part and he got to go in the crane!
Kudos to The Botanic team for creating an unforgettable experience for Abel, and for reminding us of all the joy that can come from the simplest of gestures.

Project Update: The Botanic
The MAKO team has been busy progressing work on the Eastern Villas at The Botanic, Silverdale.
This stage consists of 43 independent living units across a mix of single and two-storey buildings. Handovers are progressing and it is exciting to see the village community growing every month. Well done to the team involved.

People of MAKO: Samuel Giddings
Samuel Giddings: Senior Site Manager
Sam has worked in the construction industry for 20 years. After finishing school, he began his carpentry apprenticeship with BCITO. During this time, Sam had the opportunity to work on some exciting projects in Auckland, such as the Auckland Museum, Auckland Art Gallery, Waitakere Hospital, and Whangaparaoa College.
Sam qualified and started his own business working on small projects and refurbishments for a few years. However, he soon realised he wanted to work on larger projects and decided to transition into site management. During this time, he managed and successfully delivered bespoke projects such as theatres, airport extensions, multi-use office spaces, and apartments ranging from $50m to $200m+.
When Sam is not working, he enjoys spending time with his kids, playing golf, or watching Formula 1.

The Club House
The scaffolding is down on the exterior of the Club House as we now look to continue progressing internal services. The Pool House continues to take shape with internal services also progressing as well. Will be awesome to see this place shape up and get some water in that pool!

Rodney Specialist Centre
Bit of a click from the other side of the Rodney Specialist Centre this time! With the structure and façade essentially complete, one of the last major ticket items remains the carpark ramp. With foundations complete and blockwork advancing, MAKO were able to progress with the first stage of concrete ribs and timber infill for the ramp structure. Awesome to see all parts of this project coming together!

Here's an awesome shot of the Nikau Apartments at The Botanic here! With the slab levels all topped out, the team has been hard at work raising the final panels and framing for the roof structure. Half of it is on now, so only the final half to go until our roof shout!

Club House and Pool House
The Club House and Pool House continues to tick along at The Botanic! The cassette roofing system has now been placed across the top of both buildings allowing the team to progress towards the final finish for the roof level. Structurally, works are complete, and our team of chippies are going hard on internal framing to keep this stunning stage moving!

Rodney Centre Back Into Full Swing
Things have been all go at the Rodney Specialist Centre as the team returns for another exciting year! With install of the very first façade panels commencing at the end of 2022, the team picked up where they left off and a lot more structural glazing can be found wrapping around this building now. You might also notice that the rooftop carpark slab is fully complete too! This structure is really starting to look like a building now!

Running for Hope
On 11 February 2023 our Group Chief Executive Officer, Ryan Keogh, is taking on the bucket list challenge of completing the Coast-to-Coast Longest Day Multisport Race. Ryan is striving for this event to be much more than just a physical and mental challenge for himself. That is why he is fundraising for I AM HOPE (Gumboot Friday) which is Mike King’s charity that is committed to making a difference to Youth Mental Health in New Zealand.
To kick start the fund-raising Ryan has personally pledged $1,000 towards his ambitious goal of raising $10,000. Any amount helps, big or small and he thanks anyone in advance for a couple of $$ that can be spared to put towards this worthy cause.

Roof Shout
Great shot of the Nikau Apartments here as we close in on installing the roof! With the top level of this building having a stepped design, the carpentry team is currently going hard on framing the lower roof level before they make their way over to the upper roof. Not long until the team has their roof shout!

Rodney Specialist Centre Update
Another big moment on site at the Rodney Specialist Centre last week! The first of the Level 1 Precast Panels have been placed and the buildings prominence is really starting to show!
In addition to this, the final slab pour for the Level 1 Post Tensioned slab was also completed today, marking a major milestone for the team. With the formwork now going up for the first zone on Level 2, things are moving up another level here at the Rodney Specialist Centre!

Mates in Construction
With the Mates in Construction Fly the Flag week occurring a few weeks ago, MAKO saw this as a good opportunity to continue to convey the message around suicide prevention.
We recently held our General Awareness Training which is a site-wide workshop ran by field officers from Mates. The purpose of this training is to introduce workers to the nature of the problem and provide practical guidance as to how they can assist with suicide prevention. A valuable session attended by all, with an important message to take home at the end of the day.

The Botanic Eastern Villas
The Eastern Villas at The Botanic are really starting to shape up!
The single level villas are ticking along, with roof and cladding installations being well progressed with the team now also getting onto constructing the decks! The two-level villas are also shaping up, with more panels being lifted along with the first mid-floors being raised.

Nikau Apartments
Great birds eye view shot of the Nikau Apartments at The Botanic here! Awesome seeing formwork start going up for the Level Three suspended slab! With the “zoning” strategy adopted to the build sequence, MAKO is able to raise the structure in one zone while continuing bring up the other zones in a sequence!

Rodney Specialist Centre Update
Another milestone week on site at The Rodney Specialist Centre for MAKO! Last week marked the first of the Ground Slab Pours as we move into the thick of it on site. With the first zone poured earlier in the week, the Blackmore and Robinson team have also begun erecting formwork to prepare for the Level 1 Pour! Great stuff from Grant Read and Co!

A New Milestone
Another stage at The Botanic well underway! With the Temporary Clubhouse in use by The Botanic’s pioneering residents, we now have the Clubhouse and Pool house Facility in our sights! Excavations have been long completed, with MAKO also having shotcreted the pool and lifted multiple site manufactured precast panels. Once complete, this facility will provide a pool, spa, sauna, wellness room, residents lounge, café style dining area and BBQ facilities. Another exciting stage for the MAKO team to tackle!

Rodney Specialist Centre Moving Ahead
It was a big week on site at The Rodney Specialist Centre for MAKO, over the past month the team on site have been busy pouring panels amongst all the other action on site, and last week it all came to fruition! With concerns around procurement of panels during the pre-construction phase of the project, our Senior Site Manager, Grant Read, proposed manufacturing panels on site, and now, all self manufactured panels for The Rodney Specialist Centre have been poured and lifted! This is a huge effort from the team and it is great to see the structure taking shape!

Annual Retreat 2022
Two weeks ago, we held our Annual MAKO and Matvin Retreat in Mount Maunganui. The retreats' purpose is to allow both the MAKO Commercial and Matvin Group teams to come together and review current business plans and upcoming developments, review our business processes and look at ways in which we can add value to our people, projects and wider organisation. The couple of days away from the office and site also presents a great opportunity for the whole team to get together and catch up outside of the day to day busy working environment.

Silverdale Office Pods Project
This boutique development from our parent company Matvin Group, comprises seven Office Pods which provide a new standard of office space in Silverdale. As a temporary solution to the site, MAKO was instructed to construct seven relocatable buildings which have been purpose designed for multiple uses and environments including residential and coastal areas. These stunning pods are now home to Signature Homes, Ray White, The Planning Collective and Hall Surveying. Awesome to see this boutique business hub come to life!

Mates in Construction
We are proud to announce that MAKO has partnered with MATES in Construction NZ! Being in an industry where Construction workers are at more than twice the risk of dying by suicide compared to the rest of the workforce, it is important the industry comes together to tackle this issue front on and take the matter very seriously. MATES in construction is an amazing organisation that has truly helped the industry in New Zealand recognise the issue and has significantly raised awareness on how we can help as a community. MAKO has partnered with Massey University in Auckland to launch a brand-new scholarship program through its School of Built Environment. The scholarship aims to not only provide financial support to students in their final year but also to give them the chance to experience working in a commercial construction business, helping them gain valuable industry insight as well as obtaining their 600 hours work experience to fulfil their program requirements.
In the Inaugural year, Massey University opened applications to students in their final year and then worked to identify a list of candidates that demonstrated attributes of a future leader in the construction industry. This includes those students who convey strong leadership qualities, communication skills, a strong willingness to learn and a collaborative attitude.
In the end, MAKO interviewed 4 candidates and found two winners!
Once again, a big congratulations and a huge welcome to our Quantity Surveying Cadets Brooklyn and Jason, the first ever winners of the MAKO Future Leaders Cup!

The Nikau Apartments are starting to take shape down at The Botanic! The first of the basement wall panels have started to be placed, shaping up the bottom level of the structure. Great to see these apartments progress, they will look amazing next to the stunning villas next door!

Another milestone moment for the team at The Botanic last week, although this time, its for the next stage of villas! The site team, led by our Site Manager Hayden Johnstone, landed the first precast panels for the stage, marking the commencement of raising the structure for the next 43 villas! Last Friday the team had bit of a milestone moment at the Nikau Apartments as they achieved their first ground beam pour of 200m3. A productive result coming from a huge team effort! We are looking forward to an exciting and challenging time ahead to construct The Botanic's first apartment building!

The walkway bridge connecting the eastern and western segments of the site is now in place and the crane base for the Nikau Apartments has been installed, getting the team ready to start construction in Q1 2022! Awesome to see the team achieve these milestones as the year comes to a close!

Project Update: The Botanic
Fair bit of action going on at The Botanic Silverdale! With the first few blocks of villas all handed over to the client, the team on site has been making some serious progress with the remainder of the villas, with civil works progressing along with external and internal finishes. Enabling works for construction of the Nikau Apartments are also well underway and construction is expected to begin in Q1 2022! Awesome to see how this this place is turning out and we can't wait to show you the next update on this site!

Project Update: Rodney Specialist Centre
Another one on the books for MAKO Commercial! We are proud to announce the commencement of the Rodney Specialist Centre in Silverdale. The commencement of this building marks another addition to Matvin Group's master-planned precinct in Silverdale, which has all been built by MAKO! This is a three-storey 2500m² building which is already leased to a prominent tenant. The Rodney Specialist Centre will be of great service to the local community and will be a striking addition to a rapidly growing area. Construction is expected to begin in Q1 2022.

We are proud to say that Mako Commercial was the team behind this stunning project! The Office Pods in Silverdale were completed back in August for our client Matvin Group. The project consists of seven architecturally designed office pods with high specification interiors. All seven office pods are also fully leased!

Project Update: The Botanic
We are proud to announce the commencement of the Nikau Building at The Botanic Silverdale, commencement of this building marks the first of the apartment offering at The Botanic. The building itself consists of 32 luxury apartments built over five levels which blend in with The Botanic’s resort-style of living. These elegantly designed apartments will be a brilliant addition to the Village and a great challenge for the MAKO team! Bulk earthworks are underway now and construction is expected to begin in Q1 2022.

The leadership team catches up every few months to reflect on projects and how MAKO is tracking towards its goals. Project Update: Kumeu Central
We are extremely proud to announce the completion of Kumeu Central located at 104 Main Highway Kumeu. This development has been a rewarding one, with Anytime Fitness & Burger King occupying the front building. The rear building consists of multiple tenants across 870m² of floor space.
In total we built 1723m² of Building on 3345m² of land. The project took 18 months to complete and the end result is a great asset to the local community. Well done to all involved.

The Groves Glendene
We can't believe its been a year since we handed over the keys to the owners of 40 x residential terraced homes and apartments at The Groves development in Glendene, Auckland.
We were lucky enough to be nominated for a Property Council New Zealand award for this mixed use site which included a BestStart Childcare, Anytime Fitness Gym & many other commercial tenancies – we couldn't be more happy with how it turned out.
